Two volumes in one. Dublin: Robinson and Bussell, 7 Westmoreland Street, n.d. [1850]. Quarto. pp. [iv], 188, [iv], 188. Bound by Gerald Bellew of Dublin in contemporary hard-grained green morocco with his name in gilt lettering on the inside cover (G. Bellew / Bookbinder / Dublin). Covers framed by double gilt fillet border, gilt harp in each corner decorated by a cluster of Shamrocks in gilt; in the centre a large vignette depicting an Irish Chieftain with his left hand on a harp leaning on a broken Celtic Cross on the edge of a lake with the ruins of a round tower and castle in the background. Spine divided into six panels by five raised bands, title in gilt in the second, the remainder blocked in gilt Shamrocks; board edges and turn-ins ruled in gilt; gold, pink and blue patterned endpapers; green and white endbands. All edges gilt. Occasional mild foxing, some toning, previous owner’s signature on front free endpaper. Some wear. A splendid example of the Celtic Revival style.
