Original illustrated folding menu from the legendary Cotton Club, Harlem, featuring an Art Deco cover depicting fashionable patrons beneath the club’s famous title and address, 142nd Street & Lenox Avenue. Signed in pencil on the front cover by the African-American jazz singer Sally Gooding, a featured performer at the club during the 1930s. Internally printed with American and Chinese menus and retaining the original inserted Prohibition notice issued by the management. Folded as issued. Light age toning and minor creasing, otherwise a remarkably well-preserved example. Very good.

Founded in 1920 by the former World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Jack Johnson as the Club Deluxe, the venue was purchased in 1923 by the gangster Owney Madden, who renamed it the Cotton Club. It quickly became the most famous nightclub in America and one of the defining institutions of the Harlem Renaissance. Although situated in the heart of Harlem, the club notoriously admitted an almost exclusively white audience while showcasing the extraordinary talents of African-American musicians and entertainers, reflecting both the cultural brilliance and racial contradictions of the era.

Operating throughout America’s Prohibition era (1920–1933), the Cotton Club epitomised the glamour and contradictions of the age, where illicit drinking, organised crime and world-class jazz flourished beneath one roof, despite the restrictions of federal law.

The Cotton Club launched or transformed the careers of many of the greatest names in jazz, including Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Ethel Waters, Louis Armstrong and Lena Horne. Ephemeral items from the club were intended for temporary use and rarely survive, making original menus increasingly scarce. The retained Prohibition notice offers a fascinating reminder of the legal and social environment in which the club operated.

The contemporary signature of Sally Gooding greatly enhances the piece. A principal vocalist at the Cotton Club and later featured with Cab Calloway’s Orchestra, Gooding remains an elusive figure in jazz history, with authentic signed material seldom encountered. Her signature on an original Cotton Club menu from the venue in which she performed provides an exceptionally direct and desirable historical association.

A rare and highly evocative survival from the golden age of jazz, combining Harlem Renaissance history, Prohibition-era America and authentic performer provenance in one of the most iconic pieces of American nightclub ephemera.
