Eva Gore-Booth (1870-1926), poet, dramatist, suffragist, and social reformer, was born at Lissadell House, Co. Sligo, the younger sister of Constance Markievicz. A leading figure in the women’s suffrage and labour movements, she worked closely with Esther Roper in Manchester, campaigning for women’s rights, trade union representation, and social reform. Alongside her political activities she produced a substantial body of poetry and drama, much of it inspired by Irish mythology, mysticism, and spiritual themes.
Written in 1908 and published here in a finely produced limited edition of 256 numbered copies, The Buried Life of Deirdre reinterprets the tragic Deirdre legend through a symbolic and visionary lens. The work reflects Gore-Booth’s lifelong fascination with mythology and the spiritual dimensions of Irish tradition. Particularly appealing are the twelve illustrations by the author, whose naïve yet charming drawings complement the dreamlike atmosphere of the text.
