Printed in red and black throughout: ornamental title within a bold Celtic frame; twelve monthly calendar leaves each with a short prose legend from the life of St Patrick, and facing full-page line illustrations all signed in the block ‘Seaghan mac Cathmhaoil / 06’. Original quarter linen over grey paper boards, upper cover titled in Gaelic uncials in red. Light rubbing and scattered foxing to boards and a few leaves; a very good, complete copy.
A striking Celtic Revival picture-book by the Belfast artist Seaghan Mac Cathmhaoil (1883-1962), a close associate of the Gaelic League and a regular Maunsel illustrator. Each month couples a neat calendar with a vignette from Patrick’s legend, birth, preaching, journeys, Cashel and the crozier, death at Saul, creating a devotional keepsake in the manner of Dun Emer and Cuala Press booklets, but printed for the wider market by Maunsel, then the chief publisher of the Irish Literary Revival. Early Mac Cathmhaoil books in original boards are scarce, and this is among his most attractive: a complete suite of twelve plates dated 1906 and issued for the 1907 year.
