John MacHale (1791-1881) known as the 'Lion of the Fold of Juda' was for over half a century the dominant figure in the West of Ireland and a fearless champion of the people. An ardent anti-Unionist, landleaguer, and promoter of the Irish language, he was born at Tobbernavine near Lahardaun at the foot of Nephin in 1791. As a young boy he would have seen the French force under Humbert march up through Lahardaun and over the Windy Gap to that famous victory, the 'Races of Castlebar'.
Archbishop MacHale was educated at a local hedge school, a classical school in Castlebar and later at Maynooth. As a prelate he was seldom out of controversy whether with the proselytizing ministers in Connemara and the Achill Mission, or with Archbishop Cullen and Cardinal Newman.
