Charles Hamilton Teeling like his brother Bartholomew, a leading United Irishman and journalist, was born in Lisburn in 1778 of an old Catholic family. On 16 Sept. 1796, while still a young man, he was arrested with his father by Lord Castlereagh on suspicion of treason. He had previously been offered a commission in the British army, but had declined as it was incompatible with his nationalist sentiments. In 1802 he settled in Dundalk as a linen-bleacher. Subsequently he became proprietor of the ‘Belfast Northern Herald’, later moving to Newry, where he established the ‘Newry Examiner’. His ‘Narrative’ is of considerable historical value, throwing much light on the state of feeling among the Roman Catholics of Ulster prior to the Rebellion, and upon the later stages of the United Irish movement, as well as the progress of the Rebellion in that province.
