This work explores the origins of the Cromwellian Settlement of the 1650s, in the wake of the bloody rebellion of 1641 and suppression by Cromwell. Large tracts of land were cleared of the native Iris and given as payment to the soldiers and adventurers who funded the scheme. It is hard to believe that over four-fifths of the land of Ireland was confiscated by English and Scottish Protestants in the 17th century. This book with these adventurers, who numbered over two thousand, and explores the social and economic forces which caused this great upheaval in Irish history.
