Captain Greenville Collins (c.1643-1694), Hydrographer to William III, issued this chart within his landmark pilot, Great Britain’s Coasting Pilot (1693), the first systematic marine survey of the British and Irish coasts. Centred on Belfast Lough and Carrickfergus (Carreck Fergus Lough), it combines navigational intelligence (soundings, sandbanks, anchorages, tidal notes, compass rose and scale) with an unusually rich decorations.
