Contemporary full crimson morocco, covers framed by triple and double gilt fillets and dog-tooth roll flanking a wide gilt floral border, enclosing in the centre an urn and fountain; spine divided into six panels by five gilt raised bands, title in gilt on green morocco label in the second, the remainder tooled in gilt to a centre-and-corner design; board edges hatched in gilt; turn-ins gilt; comb-marbled endpapers; red and gold endbands. Trinity College Prize Label awarded to Thomas Lefroy in 1855 on front pastedown; badge of TCD in gilt on upper cover. A near fine copy.
A seminal work of natural history and comparative anatomy, the ‘Règne Animal’ was first published in December 1816 and translated into English in parts issued from 1824 to 1835. The work was edited and enlarged in 1840 by the zoologist Edward Blyth (1810 1873), with essays by Mudie, Johnston, and Westwood.
