Thomas Newenham Harvey was born at Cove Lodge, near Waterford in 1837. His father was a native of Cork, and his family were originally Quakers. In 1843 he records: “On one of my early visits to Dublin, perhaps about 1843, I caused a sensation at my uncle R. D. Webb’s house, in Great Brunswick Street, where we were staying, by producing a book, and announcing that I had stolen it off a bookstall in the street! My hearers were, naturally, greatly shocked, and the book was sent back at once. I cannot imagine what had prompted me to do such a thing; and, so far as I can remember, this was the only occasion on which I broke the laws of my country to such an extent as to render myself liable to punishment”.
