Charles Kickham is best known perhaps for his novel Knocknagow, which is an all time classic of its kind. He loved his country and he knew its people, and these two traits have coloured his writing, so that whilst in his handling of plot and character he strikes the high romantic note which was a convention in his day, and has dated a little in ours, his historical background is always authentic. He could tell a story well, and his work is marked by pathos, exuberance, and humour; and in The Eagle of Garryroe and Tales of Tipperary, as in Knocknagow and Sally Kavanagh, he pictures rural Ireland in some of the darkest days of our history.
