The work examines the period of time in Ireland during the early 19th century when Catholic emancipation was being fought for and won. Meyler looks at the roles played by Daniel O’Connell, the first Catholic Member of Parliament, Lord Mulgrave, the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, and the Roman Catholic Church in achieving this goal. The author argues that despite the tensions and conflicts that existed during this period, there was a sense of tranquillity that ultimately prevailed. Meyler’s book provides a valuable insight into the political and religious landscape of Ireland during a pivotal moment in its history.
