An early consular publication by Roger Casement (then H.M. Consul at Lourenço Marques - modern Maputo, Portuguese East Africa). Addressed to the Marquess of Salisbury and signed in print “Roger Casement,” the report surveys the rapidly growing transit trading hub at Delagoa Bay, the principal sea-gate for the Transvaal. Casement records the year’s imports (with a separate section on Transvaal requirements), population movements, shipping and agency arrangements, rail connections, land values, and concludes with a series of statistical annexes, including a detailed ‘Return of British Shipping at the Port of Lorenzo Marques in the Year 1896.’
