Edited by Desmond Ryan. With an introduction by William O’Brien. Dublin: At the Sign of the Three Candles, 1966 (first published 1949).

Reprint edition. 8vo. pp. 178. Original cream cloth, titled in black to upper cover and spine, in the publisher’s illustrated dust jacket. A very good copy; internally clean and bright. Dust jacket with moderate edge wear, small losses to the head of the spine and upper panel, and light rubbing, otherwise well preserved.

A significant anthology of James Connolly’s writings on the origins, course and legacy of the Easter Rising of 1916, bringing together many of his most influential essays on militarism, imperialism, revolutionary trade unionism, Irish nationalism and socialist politics. Edited by the historian Desmond Ryan, the volume includes Connolly’s reflections on the Irish Citizen Army, the relationship between labour and national independence, and his final political writings before his execution following the Easter Rising. Introduced by William O’Brien, the collection remains one of the most important post-war editions of Connolly’s work, illustrating the intellectual foundations of Irish republican socialism and the enduring influence of one of the principal architects of modern Ireland.
