Second and revised edition of Aodh de Blácam’s wide-ranging introduction to the Irish-language tradition, written for the general reader yet attentive to students and collectors. A journalist and cultural nationalist, de Blácam set out to map the continuity of Gaelic expression from the early saga cycles and monastic learning through bardic classicism, the Jacobite and aisling traditions, and into the nineteenth-century revival and the first decades of the Free State. The revised issue gives fuller space to figures such as Douglas Hyde, Peadar Ó Laoghaire, Pádraic Ó Conaire, and the school of writers who proved that contemporary prose and drama could thrive in Irish.
