A handsome Victorian illustrated edition of the poetical works of Goldsmith, Smollett, Johnson, and Shenstone, enriched with engravings after Sir John Gilbert, one of the most prolific illustrators of the nineteenth century. Goldsmith’s The Traveller and The Deserted Village, Johnson’s London and The Vanity of Human Wishes, together with Shenstone’s pastoral verses and Smollett’s satirical pieces, represent some of the finest English poetry of the eighteenth century.

The volume is notable not only for its literary content but also for its exemplary decorative publisher’s binding, characteristic of Routledge’s mid-Victorian gift books. The deep blue cloth, lavishly gilt and tooled in multiple colours, remains in excellent preservation. Such ornate bindings are increasingly collected as art objects in their own right, reflecting the peak of Victorian cloth production.

This edition offered middle-class readers an affordable yet luxurious way to access the classics, combining the authority of biography, the accessibility of annotation, and the splendour of contemporary book design.
