Austin Ó Maolaoid (1886-1961), born Austin V. Molloy in Castleknock, Dublin, was a prominent Irish illustrator, cartoonist, and book cover artist. He studied at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art, where he became friends with Harry Clarke, and started selling cartoons to Arthur Griffiths’ Sinn Féin Magazine from about 1909. He is best known for his contributions to the Irish language revival, he supplied iconic, Art Deco-inspired cover art for Colm O Lochlainn at the Sign of the Three Candles and government-backed publishers like An Gúm.
