One of the great figures of eighteenth-century Irish literature and theatre, Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751–1816) was born in Dublin and achieved lasting fame as a playwright, satirist and politician. His celebrated comedies, including The Rivals, The School for Scandal and The Critic, are distinguished by brilliant dialogue, wit and sharp observations of fashionable society. Sheridan later became proprietor of the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, while also pursuing a prominent parliamentary career. The Dramatic Works of Richard Brinsley Sheridan, accompanied by G.G.S.’s biographical account, brings together the enduring works of a master of Irish drama and English comedy.
