c. 1880s. Albumen print mounted on card 165 × 105mm. Formal studio portrait of Charles Stewart Parnell, shown three-quarter length, standing, in dark suit with hand to breast; printed caption in red to lower margin: “Charles S. Parnell.” Plain verso. In very good condition.
A strong and characterful photographic likeness of Parnell, the dominant figure in late nineteenth-century Irish politics and leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party during the Home Rule movement. Such portraits were widely circulated in carte-de-visite format, yet examples with this clean, uncluttered presentation and typographic caption are increasingly desirable, particularly when well-preserved.
