First edition. .pp. [approx. 100+]. Quarto. Original publisher’s printed card covers with large green Apple device logo, as issued. A very good copy. Light handling wear and mild spotting to covers; internally clean and well-preserved. A sound and attractive survival of an inherently ephemeral publication.
An early and highly desirable piece of Apple II programming documentation, issued during the formative years of Apple Computer. Programmer’s Aid #1 was designed to extend the capabilities of Integer BASIC by providing a suite of utility routines, allowing users to manipulate programs, verify data, test memory, and generate graphics and sound.
The manual offers a fascinating insight into early personal computing, when users were expected not merely to operate machines but to engage directly with memory structures, machine code, and program architecture. Chapters on memory testing, relocation of machine-language programs, and high-resolution graphics illustrate the technical literacy expected of early adopters.
Produced at a time when Apple was still a young and rapidly evolving company, such manuals were typically used intensively and seldom preserved. As a result, surviving examples—particularly those retaining their original covers and in clean condition—are now increasingly scarce and sought-after, both by collectors of early computing and by those interested in the design and culture of late 1970s Silicon Valley.
Programmer’s Aid #1 was released in 1978, at a time when the Apple II was establishing itself as a leading personal computer platform.
The utilities described were often supplied in ROM form, representing an early example of integrated software enhancement for consumer machines.
Early Apple manuals of this period are increasingly collected as artefacts of computing history, with strong crossover appeal to design, technology, and innovation collectors.
