Compiled by Miss Vigors (Mrs. S. de C. O’Grady) & Mrs. Peirce Mahony. Twelve volumes. Dublin: Printed for the Association for the Preservation of the Memorials of the Dead, 1892/1932. Octavo. Cloth. A very good set. Of the utmost rarity.
The Association for the Preservation of Memorials of the Dead was an Irish organization, founded by Philip D. Vigors, that documented and preserved the inscriptions and engravings on tomb and headstones from 1888 to 1934. Through the enlistment of willing participants in this endeavour the Association compiled an impressive catalogue of volumes, pertaining to the engravings and epitaphs that so reverently evoked a families’ memories of a loved one(s) who had passed. The association published these gravestone inscription in their journals between 1888 and 1934. Entries are arranged alphabetically by county and subdivided by parish, also in alphabetical order.
The Journal of the Association for the Preservation of the Memorials of the Dead in Ireland (usually cited as Memorials of the Dead) was the principal late-nineteenth and early twentieth century effort to record Irish gravestone inscriptions before weathering, vandalism and churchyard improvements erased them. Founded in the late 1880s, the Association drew on a wide network of local clergy, schoolmasters and antiquaries, notably contributors such as Lord Walter FitzGerald and Canon J. F. M. ffrench, to copy epitaphs from every province.
With approximately 30,000 personal names and over two thousand place names, this is an extremely important reference work for every patron of Irish family history and genealogy.
