Fionán Mac Coluim (1875-1966), one of the most important collectors and advocates of Irish song and folklore of the twentieth century. Born in Ballymoney, Co. Antrim, to a merchant father and a Kerry-born schoolteacher mother, Mac Coluim’s early life was marked by movement between Antrim, Kilkenny, Cork, Kerry, Dublin, and London, where he worked in the Treasury and India Offices and became active in the Gaelic League. From 1902 he served the League as Ard-Timire, song collector, and later as its American representative, and went on to hold influential roles with the Vocational Education Committees, the Irish Folklore Commission, and as musical adviser to the Minister for Education (1945-66). A prolific editor and contributor to Irish-language periodicals, often under pseudonyms including Finghín na Leamhna and Goll Mac Morna, his legacy as a preserver of Gaelic music and tradition. The Irish Book Lover said in 1957 when his friends were presenting him with a token of respect, that the name of Fionán Mhic Coluim would not be forgotten as long as the music and songs of the Gaels were respected.
