A fine black-and-white half-length portrait photograph of Éamon de Valera, signed prominently in white ink across the lower right of the image, “Eamonn De Valera”. With the original government harp-stamped envelope, the photograph shows the Irish statesman in later life, wearing his characteristic round spectacles and dark suit, posed formally against a softly lit interior background. A strong and highly displayable signed image of one of the central political figures in modern Irish history. In fine condition. 20.32 × 25.4 cm.
De Valera (1882–1975) was one of the most consequential figures in twentieth-century Ireland: leader of the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War, founder of Fianna Fáil, President of the Executive Council, Taoiseach, and later President of Ireland. Signed photographs of de Valera remain keenly sought after by collectors of Irish history, political memorabilia, Easter Rising material, revolutionary Ireland, and presidential autographs, particularly when the image is both visually striking and unmistakably associated with the sitter.
The present photograph has strong decorative and collector appeal, combining a clean formal likeness with a bold autograph placement. An excellent piece for collectors of Éamon de Valera signed photographs, Irish political history, or important twentieth-century Irish autographs.
