Dublin: Dé Danann Press, 136 Sandyford Road, Dundrum, Dublin 14. Mount Salus Press, 1975. First Edition. Quarto. pp. [4], 72. Illustrated wrappers with a full-colour design ‘Ériu’ on upper cover; illustrated throughout in black and white, including several full-page plates in Fitzpatrick’s intricate Celtic-revival style. Signed by the artist in blue ink on the half-title. A very good copy, some light creasing to lower wrapper corner, otherwise clean and bright. Scarce. Early signed examples of Celtia seldom appear; the softbound first edition was printed in limited numbers and rapidly sold out.
A beautifully produced volume gathering Jim Fitzpatrick’s early poster art and mythological drawings—works that helped define the modern visual language of Irish myth and identity. The volume includes notes by the artist explaining each composition: Deirdre and Naoise, Cúchulainn, Gráinne and Diarmuid, Lancelot and Guinevere, and other figures from Celtic and Arthurian lore.
