Longford (The Earl of) & O’Neill (Thomas P.) Éamon de Valera (Inscribed by Éamon de Valera with original photograph)
€425.00
1 in stock
Illustrated. Dublin: Gill and Macmillan, in association with Hutchinson of London, 1970. pp. xii, 686. Green buckram, title in gilt on spine. In pictorial dust jacket. Inscribed a warm Irish-language inscription, translating as “To Nora with great respect,” signed in a clear contemporary hand. Signed copies of de Valera’s works and biographies are increasingly uncommon in commerce, particularly with inscriptions in Irish. With original photograph of De Valera in suit and tie.
Previous owners' inscription. A little edge-worn. Internally foxed, consistent with paper stock of the period. Otherwise, a good copy.
A scarce signed copy of one of the earliest substantial biographical studies of Éamon de Valera, published during his political ascendancy and prior to the later constitutional transformation of the Irish state. The volume was issued at a time when de Valera’s international reputation and domestic authority were still evolving, lending contemporary immediacy to the account.
An important signed association copy relating to one of the central political figures of twentieth-century Ireland.
