Two Original Photographs of Richard Mulcahy, including one with Michael Collins at Arthur Griffith’s Funeral (Signed by Richard Mulcahy)

Dublin, August 1922. Two original black-and-white photographs (each 7 × 10 cm), housed in the original brown leather presentation wallet with gilt decorative borders and Mylar windows. The funeral photograph signed by Richard Mulcahy in black ink at the lower margin. Fine condition.

A rare photographic grouping centred on General Richard Mulcahy (1886–1971), one of the principal military leaders of the Irish Revolution and Commander-in-Chief of the National Army following Michael Collins's death.

The first photograph is a formal portrait of Mulcahy. The second depicts Michael Collins and Richard Mulcahy marching side by side in military uniform during the funeral procession of Arthur Griffith, President of Dáil Éireann, whose state funeral took place in Dublin on 16 August 1922, only six days before Collins was killed at Béal na Bláth. This photograph is signed by Richard Mulcahy in black ink at the lower margin.

The image captures two of the central figures in the struggle for Irish independence at one of the defining moments in the foundation of the Irish Free State. Arthur Griffith's funeral marked the last public occasion on which Collins and Mulcahy appeared together before Collins's death on 22 August 1922, giving the signed photograph exceptional historical significance. The accompanying signed portrait further enhances the association, creating an attractive and coherent presentation set centred on Mulcahy.

Preserved in the original leather wallet, lightly worn with age but remarkably well preserved, the photographs retain excellent tonal contrast and are in fine condition throughout.

A rare and evocative signed photographic grouping, uniting Michael Collins and Richard Mulcahy at one of the final public appearances of Collins before his death, accompanied by a signed portrait of Mulcahy.
