A handsome and increasingly uncommon O’Connell Press edition of Mangan’s poetry, issued as part of the O’Connell Press Popular Library. Published nearly four decades after the poet’s death, it brought together many of his best-loved nationalist lyrics—including Dark Rosaleen, Kathaleen Ny-Houlahan, The Lovely Land, The Saw Mill, and A Vision of Connaught in the Thirteenth Century—together with a selection of his celebrated translations from German and other European literatures. Mangan (1803–1849) remains one of the defining voices of nineteenth-century Irish poetry, profoundly influencing both W. B. Yeats and James Joyce through his fusion of Romanticism, nationalism, and European literary traditions.
